Route des 4 Chalets

The four chalets that give their name to the Route des 4 Chalets were originally built in about 1900 as residences and consulting rooms for doctors attached to one of the nearby tuberculosis clinics. The chalets are named after flowers, Les Paquerettes, Edelweiss, Soldanelle and Espérance. La Soldanelle is the third from the right. In front of it but not on the Route des 4 Chalets is the Chalet La Forêt, built in the late 1970s.   In the 1980s La Soldanelle was purchased by philosopher and literary critic Jean Starobinski for his three sons. The middle son, Pierre, was at the time the extremely dynamic director of the Leysin Tourist Office. He continues to occupy the top floor of the building. Robert and Lucia have lived in the two lower floors since 1990. Over time five other buildings have been constructed on the Route des 4 Chalets, the Club Vagabond,  once a private sanatorium and now a condominium complex, being the most famous.
